Homefire Grill: Bison, Bannock and a Fireplace
Two decades before Indigenous cuisine became a national conversation, Homefire Grill was already serving it in Edmonton’s west end — bison treated with whole-animal respect, bannock warm from the oven, saskatoon berries folded into the menu like a family recipe. This is heritage cooking with a hearth, in every sense.
The Story
Founded in 2005 by the Alberta Indian Investment Corporation, Homefire Grill set out to prove that a restaurant could honour its homeland’s first foods and still be everyone’s neighbourhood favourite. The kitchen built itself around fire — rotisserie and a fire-roasted oven behind an open pass — and around a principle: use every part of the bison, waste nothing, feed generously.
What to Order
The bison burger with saskatoon relish has become the house classic, while the elk soup and bison stew carry the deepest comfort. From the fire-roasted oven, the Carnivore pizza — pepperoni with ground elk — bridges familiar and new, and the bannock belongs on every table. Rotisserie dishes reward the hungry; portions land on the generous side of honest.
