JOEY Mayfield: The Glamorous One
Every restaurant family has a sibling who overdresses, and in Edmonton’s JOEY family that’s Mayfield. Floor-to-ceiling drapery, chandeliers that sprawl across the ceiling, a reflecting pool catching the light — the west end’s Mayfield Common location treats dinner as a small production, and the kitchen holds up its end of the show.
The Story
JOEY’s roots run through three generations of Canadian hospitality: from Leroy “Bus” Fuller’s early A&W franchises, through the Earls chain he built with one son, to JOEY itself — founded by another son, Jeff, in Calgary in 1992 as Joey Tomato’s Kitchen. What began as a pasta house evolved into a globally inspired menu that moves from Japanese rolls to French-leaning steak frites without blinking, and Mayfield serves it in the brand’s most decorated Edmonton room.
What to Order
Locals rate the sushi among the city’s best, which makes a roll the natural opener. From there: the steak frites for tradition, the butter chicken for comfort, a bowl or main-course salad when the day calls for balance. Cocktails are shaken with intent, and dessert is worth negotiating over — order one, request two spoons, regret nothing.
The Space
Dark wood booths and high-tops under warm, dramatic lighting, with the drapery and water feature giving the room a suite-at-a-good-hotel feel. It photographs beautifully and yet stays comfortable — heels and jeans coexist happily here.
