JOEY South Common: Steak, Sushi and a Little Theatre
Some restaurants pick a lane; JOEY South Common paves four of them. Steak beside sushi, butter chicken beside burgers — the globally minded menu should not work, and yet this South Edmonton Common dining room has spent years proving it does, plate after polished plate. Among the malls and big-box marquees of the retail district, it reads as a genuine occasion restaurant.
The Story
The brand is a Fuller family production: Jeff Fuller — son of Earls founder Leroy “Bus” Fuller — opened the first Joey Tomato’s Kitchen in Calgary in 1992 as a humble pasta house. Executive chef Chris Mills then steered the kitchen around the world, layering in Japanese, Southeast Asian and steakhouse influences until the pasta joint had become one of Canada’s defining premium-casual dining rooms. South Common carries that evolution in full.
What to Order
Start with a sushi roll or the seared tuna, then commit: steak frites done properly, the beloved blackened chicken, or a bowl when lunch calls for something lighter. Salads here are main-course serious, the truffle fries are communal property, and the dessert list rewards those who save room. Servers steer confidently — ask and follow.
The Space
A sleek, low-lit room where the lounge glows like a hotel bar and the dining side keeps enough hush for conversation. White plates, dark wood, staff who move like they have somewhere important to be — it is casual dining wearing a very good blazer.
Who It’s For
Date nights that started as shopping trips, girlfriends’ dinners, family celebrations, and business lunches that need to impress without stiffness.
Good to Know
Should we book ahead? For dinner, especially Friday to Sunday, yes; lunch is easier.
What’s the signature dish? Regulars split between the steak frites and the blackened chicken — ordering both for the table settles it.
Is it good for celebrations? Very — staff handle birthdays and anniversaries with practised charm.
Are there lighter options? Yes: bowls, salads and sushi keep it fresh rather than heavy.
What’s the dress code? None enforced — smart casual matches the room’s mood best.
