Ask what is on the grinder; the answer is a name from this province, and the staff will tell you why it is there.<\/p>\n<p>What you should not expect is a laboratory. There is no rotating flight of micro-lots, no fermentation vocabulary, no invitation to compare two Ethiopias side by side. That is a choice. West describes the place as a community caf\u00e9 and talks about the office workers who come in every day sharing what is happening in their lives as the thing that keeps the business interesting. It is a modest ambition stated without irony, and after a decade downtown it has proved a durable one \u2014 including through the years when downtown offices emptied out and caf\u00e9s like this one lost their entire customer base overnight.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_it_suits\"><\/span>Who it suits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Taking it away.<\/strong> This is the primary use, and the caf\u00e9 is honest about it. A small footprint on a busy downtown corner in a city with a serious winter produces a counter optimised for people who are walking somewhere. The queue moves, the order is understood, and you are back outside quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A short meeting.<\/strong> Excellent for a forty-minute conversation, poor for a three-hour one. Seating is limited, so two people can almost always find somewhere, but a group of six will struggle and should not try at the morning peak. For a coffee with a colleague between meetings \u2014 the exact scenario the neighbourhood generates all day \u2014 it is close to ideal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with a laptop.<\/strong> Manage your expectations. This is a small room where seats are the scarce resource, and the social contract in a caf\u00e9 of this size is that you do not occupy a table for half a day. Come outside the rush, plan on an hour rather than an afternoon, and do not count on finding an outlet within reach of the seat that happens to be free. Big windows do most of the work, pulling in whatever light the prairie sky is offering and putting the room on display to everyone passing. Seating is genuinely limited \u2014 this is a caf\u00e9 you can take in at a glance from the doorway \u2014 and the colourful chairs set out on the pavement have become a small landmark on a block that badly needed one.<\/p>\n<p>The consequence of the size is that atmosphere is dictated by the clock rather than by the design. At the morning rush the room is a corridor of coats and takeaway cups; an hour later the same space is calm enough to hear the milk steaming. Both versions are the real caf\u00e9. Getting a proper Montreal bagel onto a downtown Edmonton counter is a genuine piece of sourcing, and it is the item to order if you are here for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, expect a modest pastry case rather than a menu: a handful of things suited to eating standing up or at a small table with a cup. Nobody is pretending this is a brunch destination, and that clarity is part of why the coffee side runs as smoothly as it does.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_come\"><\/span>When to come<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is a weekday caf\u00e9 in an office district, and the rhythm follows from that without exception. The doors open early enough to catch people on their way in, and the room closes in the late afternoon \u2014 there is no evening trade here, and planning an after-work coffee is planning a disappointment. The busiest window is the first stretch of the working day, followed by a second smaller surge around the middle of it.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-morning and mid-afternoon on a weekday are the calm pockets, and they are when the caf\u00e9 is at its best: a seat by the window, a street outside doing its thing, staff who have time to talk. Weekends downtown are a different city \u2014 quieter, with fewer offices feeding the room \u2014 so check before making a Saturday trip specifically.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there\"><\/span>Getting there<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Coffee Bureau sits in the heart of downtown Edmonton, on the main avenue that runs the length of the core, a short walk from the government and financial blocks and from the shopping district. An LRT station is a couple of minutes away on foot, and downtown bus service passes constantly, so there is no reason to drive here \u2014 and good reason not to, since parking downtown is a paid, metered proposition and the caf\u00e9 has no lot of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclists have it easiest: the caf\u00e9 is essentially on the downtown protected bike network, which is why the founder saw the unit from a bicycle in the first place. In winter, note that much of the surrounding core is connected by the pedway system, but this room is at street level with its door on the sidewalk \u2014 you will be stepping outside to reach it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Understand the format before you arrive and you will like it a great deal more. First, weekday and weekend downtown are effectively different neighbourhoods, and the caf\u00e9&#8217;s schedule reflects the weekday one.
